A phobia is an irrational fear of something. It’s not about you being irrational; it’s about the way your brain reacts to that fear.
How are phobias made?
Phoias take root in various ways. Sometimes, they’re passed down through generations – you might remember your mum having an intense fear of spiders, and that fear might have found its way to you. Or it could be something traumatic that happened when you were young. Perhaps so young that you can’t remember.
Imagine you as a baby sitting on the floor; you see a button on the floor in front of you and you reach to pick it up. As we know babies always put things in their mouths first. You find yourself screamed at! Your brain then takes a snapshot of everything that’s going on around you, including the button. This memory i then stored in the part of your brain that keeps you safe, so you find yourself being triggered every time you see a button, like a mental alarm bell.
Here’s where it gets interesting: while we sleep, our brain usually processes these events in our lives, helping us to move forward. But sometimes, this process doesn’t quite work as expected, and memories can get stuck in the emotional part of our brain.
